HTC EVO custom text notification help?

Hello, I have an HTC EVO 4G and I have the file i want as my text notification sound its a custom file its in my music area and when i click menu then set as it only gives me the option to set as ringtone or on certain contacts, and when i try going to the notifications sounds in sounds>settings it only shows default tones for notification sounds and doesnt have custom located anywhere if anyone can help me that would be great oh and to point out I only have a mac if this requires a computer.
