HTC Desire problems - once again.?

I have... So many questions.
Explanation:
I'm a typical teenager. I use my phone for teenage use. Text messaging friends, calling mom. I've had my phone since this last Christmas and I'm already getting tired of it.
Problems:
I have two apps on my phone. Well, three, but the other is the factory version. No updates. Anyway, my three apps are Advanced Task Killer, Adao File Manager, and the factory version of Facebook. I deleted all of my other apps because my phone insists that I have "low space." I have an 8GB memory card, I've deleted all of my messages, cleared everything - browser history, caches, form data, pictures, music - I'm only using two screens. The main one with a few shortcuts and the time and weather, and then another for all power friendly things (turning on and off WiFi, airplane mode, GPS, auto-sync, mobile internet, Bluetooth, screen brightness, yada yada.) I have almost nothing on my phone. I go to Adao File Manager and it tells me 91% (134M/147M) of my phone space is APPLICATIONS? Excuse me if it's just me, but what!?
Question(s):
Why is my phone doing this? I honestly don't know how to fix it, and I've been into the U.S. Cellular store so many times. Please help.
Is there a way to prevent this in the future without having a pretty-much-dead-for-nothing phone?
