HTC Desire - Charging Battery. Best Practice?

Is it advisable to charge an HTC Desire as and when it warns you the power is running low (14% as it warns me now), or should I let the battery run right down and charge from empty as I've been advised to do before hand.

I don't know if Smartphone's are any different from 'standard' phones.
