HTC 8525 or Nokia N75

I currently have an old Nokia 6620 (former AT&T Wireless) and have decided to finally upgrade now that 2 suitiable phones are coming out soon. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get. I've never had a PDA phone before so I apologize in advance for the stupid questions. I figure those of you who have an 8125 should be able to answer the questions related to the 8525. This phone will be more for personal use than business use.

My understanding is that HSDPA isn't much faster than regular UMTS unless you are tethering? Can anyone confirm this? I don't plan to tether. Also, how is Windows Mobile compared to Symbian? Is it a hassle to use as a regular phone (ie. do you have to go through a few menus before it allows you to dial a number?) Do you have to open it up to use the keyboard to dial someone who is already in your contacts?

I would like to ability to check POP3 e-mail without downloading attachments by default. Can the Outlook that comes with Windows Mobile do this? I know my 6620 will download all attachements and there is no way to stop it from doing so.

With a PDA phone, I believe I can use the web browser to go to any website and not just the mobile ones. Is this accurate?

Also with the PDA phone, how is synchronization done? I'd like to be able to sync Outlook data at minimum. Can it be done via Bluetooth or WiFi?

I assume that with the PDA phone, I can transfer pictures and MP3 ringtones from my computer to be assigned to each contact, similar to how it is done on a Nokia. Is this correct or is this feature not available?

Is there a PDA connect plan available that includes at least 1000 text messages?

Any other pluses or minuses for either phone let me know.

Thanks,

Maaz

HSDPA is faster then UMTS, but they both use the same technology and hardware. The only difference is in the software that allows HSDPA to transfer data quicker.

There is an option to not download attachments or limit the size of the attachment. Allowing you to quickly check emails. Then if needed you can choose to download the attachments. The Outlook that comes with WM5 has this built in.

You can go to about any website on the internet. You may need to get a Flash plugin though. Some sites that use Frames are funky.

Syncing is nearly flawless with Outlook on your PC. It can be done via USB, Ifrd, and Bluetooth. Wi-Fi syncing was removed from Activesync due to security issues.

You can assign custom ringtones and pictures and attach them to each contact.

TriAxis, thanks for the information. It looks like the 8525 is a better option, mainly due to the e-mail client. WiFi syncing isn't that important since I can use Bluetooth instead.

Can anyone answer the questions on ease of use as a phone?

Thanks,

Maaz

Extremely easy, and that's from me using the 8125, on the 8525 they added a windows button, an ok button, and a track wheel... So imagin, also to answer you question about the unlimited text, there is no plan that would do that.. The PDA plans are data only, if you want something close to unlimited text would be our "Messaging Extreme" plan which would give you 3000 text for $19.99. But if you get a pda connect plan with unlimited data, and you use aim.. Just download the hacked PDA version of aim which would take from ur data (which is unlimited) and not from your text. But the 8525 will be very simple to use, read the review that was written about it, just search the Cingular Thread

I'm also in this same situation(8525 or N75).

I was actually thinking about getting both, but this is the first time I'd have a GSM phone, so I have a few questions as well.

The 8525 I know has WM5, but does that mean it has Microsoft Word built in? I saw that it has Outlook, but that's it. Would there be a way to download a mobile microsoft word, and powerpoint as well?

I have no idea how dumb or how smart this may sound to the informed, but would I be able to switch my sim card from the N75 to the 8525, so I only have one bill?
I'm assuming not since I'd have a data plan for the 8525 and not the N75, but if I have all of the features of the phone that I'd have on the N75 on the sim card for the 8525, as well as the data plan, would my N75 still work or would I have to get 2 separate plans or the family plan?

I live in a non-3G area so I can't experience the wonders of 3G speed, but both the N75 and 8525 seem to still have some sort of "high speed"(I lost the word I was looking for), but anyway, would the 8525 and N75 connectivity still be fast enough to support add ons like slingbox?

Thanks.

ibby03, thanks for the information. I think I'm convinced the 8525 is the way to go. $449 is a bit steep but if I get 2 years out of it, it won't be horrible. I wish they had a better messaging plan though. I noticed that it jumps from 200 messages to 3000. a 1000 message package would've been more ideal for me. Oh well.

C.Money - You can always switch your SIM card between phones and make and receive calls with either one. There is no issue there. I'll let someone else address the data plan issue because I'm not 100% sure but I would assume you could still use the PDA data plan on the N75.

Windows Mobile 5 comes with Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint mobile, and Outlook Mobile. I would be surprised if 8525 didn't have these.

I live in a non-3G area also, so I hope they have the 8525 available here or at least give me the ability to order it online or by phone.
