How would you feel about an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet style cafeteria for you

child's school? This year our school district has changed their school lunch program.

They felt that kids that eat less are wasting food and kids that eat more are paying a lot just for lunch.

So they came up with a solution. One price, all you can eat.

They have divided the cafeteria. One side are kids that purchase the buffet. The other side are kids that bring a lunch or chose not to eat or share with kids who bring their lunch. Kids from one side ARE NOT allowed to sit with kids on the other side as they may share food and defeat the purpose. Kids from the buffet are allowed to go to the other side and then return, but they can't bring any buffet food to the non-buffet side.

The food distribution is controlled by the lunch aides dispensing all the food to the students tray. The portions are half or a quarter of what a regular portion would be. This lowers waste. The student can get up and get back into line to get more food.

The program seems to be doing well for financially strapped parents that are afraid the money they give their child isn't feeding them enough. The school district is happy because they feel they are not wasting a lot a food, reducing food cost.

The negatives are parents are upset that they feel it segregates between the children that have a bag lunch and the children that pick the buffet because they cannot sit together. They are also upset because they feel it promotes over-eating and obesity.

I was just wondering what your opinion is on this? The school district is wondering if they should keep the program for next year. No I can't tell you where this is at. I am a tax payer and do not work for the school district.
I do not think it is segregation because the kids on the buffet side are allowed to sit on either side, just not on the non-buffet side with their buffet lunch. Though kids on the non-buffet side cannot go to the buffet side, it is not baring them due to a certain race or poverty level, its just food control. Its not people control.

Also, every school district in america to my knowledge has a free lunch card type program for children from families that qualify for it. This new buffet style lunch works with the lunch card so all the poor children in the school most likely have a lunch card and eat all the want for free. So give me a break. And the lunch BTW is only $1.75 so I mean come on.
