How would you ask a friend to a date dance?

Okay, here's the deal, everyone says we like each other, I know I like him but I don't know so much that he likes me. There is a girl's choice dance coming up and I'd really like to go with him instead of going the charity case route and asking a guy who would normally stay dateless. The problem with the guy I like is that I don't want the way I ask him to be too flirtatious, it needs to be clear we're just friends and I want to keep it that way, at least for now any help here?
