Watch Out for the Trees

I've just got a second hand bicycle and I would love to paint little patterns on to it to make it personal and discourage thieves. I don't really want to have to strip the paint off and use spray paint (I have had patchy results with spray paint before on kitchen cabinets) to redo the frame (although there is some damage to the paintwork but no rust) as it's not ugly I just want to do this for fun - if it's not possible then i'll let it be.
I was hoping after a thorough clean with turpentine I could just use hammerite + a small brush and paint away. Perhaps requiring a few coats?
Will this work? Has anyone done this? Can I see a picture if you have?
Perhaps some kind of paint you use to touch up cars would work. The frame is white so I do have a blank canvas..
