how would i go about writing and publishing my own book, or a line of books if it goes

that far? i have been thinking about writing a book, a fiction book about where i grew up and the integrated problems we have here ,because i just want to see if it could pay off, it would probably be along the lines of drugs, guns ,hillbilly's, and how it all ties into this area along with the corruption of the legal system. i just want to know that if i did do this and take the time and energy, that it would somehow pay off in the long run. I know you never know if it will work but im just saying if it did all work out and all, how much would i have to pay out for publishing, marketing, and other general costs of doing something like this, and how much should i expect to make if its a good seller at a regular fiction book price, i know i know, these are all unknowns to you and i but i just want some opinions and some input by other people before i think about this anymore, and i know its my decision when its all said and done if i want to do it or not, i just want to know if there are anything that you can tell me about how much a writer makes and how much you are expected to produce of the material and what kind of money i will have to pay before getting any kind of compensation for it, thank you for reading and answering.
