Also how do these work in a dynamic way to control our emotions and behaviour?
In what way does it do this?

Freud (1856-1939) came up with this model in 1933 as his answer to how the processes of the mind worked. It involves the id, ego and super-ego. The id contains the libido and has one rule called the pleasure principle, to obtain immediate gratification in whatever form it make take. The ego is the self, it controls and integrates behaviour. Driven by the reality principle, it acts as a mediator between the id and the super-ego. The super-ego is sub-divided between the conscience (the rules & restrictions of society) and the ego-ideal (what you would like to be - your goals). Freud (1933), and many others since then, believe that these dynamic processes control our emotions and behaviour.
