How will my business benefit from me earning a business degree?

Hi all,

Currently, I am employed as a mobile electronics installer/tech. I really enjoy working in this industry and five years down the road I would love to open a small business with my brother. I have been attending community college off and on for a few years (it's complicated) and I'm nine units away from completing my general education requirements. At first my goal was to go into audio engineering but recently I changed my goal to earning a college degree in business. I am fully aware that a business degree is not necessary to run a successful business. My question is what would be the advantages? Any feedback would be great!

A degree will help you very little, unless you are in a highly technical field that requires deep education such as engineering or medicine. I think it would be better to figure out what kind of business you want to start, what skill sets you need to develop, then take a few courses that meet those needs for you. Save the rest of your money for use as start up capital. Far more important is to find a mentor--someone who has a lot of business experience that is willing to coach you through things. This will be a person you can talk to and express all your hopes, fears, concerns, and bright ideas. I never took one business course in my life, and I own a successful taxi company. My mentors have made the difference.

I would say the experience/learning you get and then people would probably trust you more. Nowadays it seems you need a degree to do anything and get a salary. I think a business degree would help you get employed by a corporation. People would also notice that you put in the hard work to earn the degree and realize you aren't someone who slacks off.
My father started a company with only part of a college degree and he is quite successful but he regrets not getting one and I think it will still be beneficial to have one as head of a small business if.

I'm just getting into the college process so I hope I helped.
