How well does the Nikon D700 with a 12-24mm lens deal with low light sports photography?

With ISO set at 1600 is there a lot of motion blur and fuzziness. I've heard great stories but I just need a second opinion.
And no bias comments please, keep it healthy for the love of photography.

Thank you.

I couldn't possibly answer your question without knowing how fast your lens is.

The D700 handles low light exceptionally well but, coupled with a lens that is say, a 5.6 maximum aperture, it would be seriously crippled in the capture of action.

A fast lens of 1.2 or 1.4 should do just fine depending on the level of light you are dealing with.
