How to write a php webtemplate?

I am poor in php. I wanted to make a web template to show titles of 10 items under each catagory on my home page.
wanted to divide the screen into 3 columns and 2 columns to show post titles.
Can anyone suggest me if there is any software to do it ?
If not, please tell me sample code. Thanks
