How to use iPHone on Boost Mobile?

My friend has an iPhone on boost mobile. And Im interested in getting one for myself. He said he bought an iPhone on craigslist and then took it to boost mobile. But Im confused as to what iphone to buy. Like does it need to be unlocked ? or does it have to be a certain iPhone ?
