How to use CSULA financial aid first year?

I received grant money to attend CSULA and was wondering when and how do I take out the money to use it to buy books and pay for tuition? first day of school is this thursday. Thanks!
When do I receive the check? I want to buy my books the day school starts so I don't fall behind because I heard they start off at a fast pace.

In other words, you receive check before school starts or after? First quarter buy out of my own pocket?
 
They'll autmostically pay tuition with it, anything that's left over you'll get a check in the mail/direct deposit in your bank account (if you signed up for direct deposit)
