How to use a JB Systems AX400 amplifier correctly?

I recently bought on eBay a JB Systems AX400 pro amplifier, thinking I could connect up a pair of regular hifi speakers to it and play an iPod through it at my nephews wedding reception, seeing as it's going to be in a marquee and will need a hefty amp to play the music loud enough.
The speakers connect ok, to the binding posts, and the iPod is connected ok though the standard audio jack inputs, but the volume levels are pretty low.
Is this because of the iPod itself not putting out a high enough signal ?
The amp has attenuation controls instead of a volume control, but is supposed to be rated at 135w per channel at 8ohms.
Should I be using a different source, a pre amp, or what ? I was expecting the amp to make the furniture move, but am now a bit stuck as to what I'm doing wrong.
Any help more than gratefully received.
thanks
Peter
