how to unlock sony ericsson w580i with the unlock code?

I'm visiting china for two months so i call at&t for the unlock code which they gave me right away. But then when i put the china mobile sim card into the phone, it just said incorrect sim card...it doesnt even give me the option to put in the unlock code...please help. Thanks.
addition: the phone easily roamed to China Mobile with the at&t sim card in.
