HOW TO UNLOCK LG CU720 SHINE?

I have an LG Shine attached to the AT&T network and i want to unlock it. Its actually my dads and i have T Mobile. My phone got ran over by a car and i need a new one, hence me wanting to unlock the LG shine. The only problem is that my dad was a day late on his payment to AT&T so they turned off is service so he cancelled his plan. I understand that you can call customer support and give them your IMEI number but will it work if you are no longer a customer?
