How to unlock Iphone 2g ATT?

My friend gave me his iphone 2g 3.1.3, and when I put my SIM card in it tells me to connect to iTunes. When I go through the process it tells me that I need to pay $20 a month. How do I unlock the phone so I can use it with ATT and get past the connect to iTunes screen?
