I've been on Prilosec for several years, after a GERD diagnosis. I'd like to try switching to Betaine HCl. After much research online, I suspect my problem is hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid), rather than excess acid. I have tried the Betaine HCl for a few days, and am working on settling in on the correct dosage. As a surprise side-benefit, I have already noticed a remarkable improvement in my bowels. I previously have experienced significant cramping. But for several days now, I have had well-formed stools with no cramping.

My challenge is how do I transition away from the Prilosec? For now, I am continuing to take the Prilosec, and adding the Betaine, just to see what it does to me. I'm predicting I will settle in at two 600 mg capsules per meal. But my ultimate goal is to stop the Prilosec. How should I do that? Should I stop both the Betaine and the Prilosec for a few days, and endure the discomfort, then try to add the Betaine back? Or just stop the Prilosec and continue the Betaine?

I would especially like to hear from someone who has made this transition already. How did you do it, and what was your experience?
