How to touch up the roots of blonde and red hair?

So, my hair is naturally dirty blonde, and about 2 months ago, I had bleach highlights all over, with a layer of bright red underneath the top on one side. Problem is, I don't know quite know how to touch up the roots..

I've been told that bleaching your hair is damaging if you keep getting it re-done, as well as getting it done professionally is also expensive etcetc. so I'm considering dying it myself at home (risky, I know), with foils and a box colour for the red, and one for the blonde..

but I've also heard of root touch-up kits you can buy (for the blonde), and was wondering if they are just as good, and would you recommend them?

Basically, I just need someone's opinion on how to touch up the roots..
