How to talk on AOL IM?

My friend and I talk on aol through facebook....but we want to learn how to just normal AOL IM? So we can do video chats and audio chats and what not but it wont work for us because it always shows us offline why??? It says i'm online to me but to him it looks like i'm offline and the same for him?What do we do?
