How to take this strange text message relationship further?

me and a girl i used to be good friends with from school have been texting for years, but i cant seem to find away to ask her to spend time with me. Even just as friends. she is single, we have different groups of friends, and she's really pretty. for some reason she thinks it might be awkward which is putting me off askin i guess. mental isnt it
 
Why dont you just text her and say "Hey, do you fancy meeting up sometime?" Simple really, and you have nothing to lose. Just go for it.
