How to take photos out of Ipod and transfer them back onto Vista PC?

I need to find out because my Vista latop craped out in the beginning of the year and it lost all my very importent photos from my last days in my grandparents house and I forgot I put alot of them in my Ipod. Now I want them back on my laptop but I just want to copy them.
I tried just plugging it in but it doesn't see the photos
Any Suggestions?
