HOW TO TAKE A LIEN OFF A CAR?

When I bought my car my friend gave me a loan and put a lien on the car. I've paid it off and now I want to sell the car. His name is still on the title as lienholder. How do I clear the title?

Do I have to go to the DMV and bring my friend with me to sign it over? What info should I bring?

Your friend must have is signature notarized on the back of the title releasing the lien on the car. Make sure he signs in the proper place. Then you take the title to DMV and have a new title issued in you name. Then you can sell the car.

When you sell the car, you have your signature notarized on the back of the title. Give the title to the new owner. Do not give the vehicle registration paperwork to the new owner. You take that registration paperwork, sign the back of it and send it to the DMV. If you fail to do this important step, as far as the state and insurance company is concerned, you are still the owner of the car and liable for anything the new owner does with the car until this task is done.
