How to switch service over to a used phone w/out calling Verizon?

this is the only thing I can think of

1. take out the battery
2. there is a little card with some numbers on it (simcard)
3. take it out of your phone, and put it in the new one

if you did it right, it should have transferred over everything. then again, depends on the phone types. but that should work. I have to do it way too much here in my business
 
I am purchasing a used cell phone from a neighbor of mine and would like to have service put on it as soon as possible. Seeing as I am not the primary on the Verizon account(I'm not even listed, so I don't have any say unless my husband calls in) I would like to switch the service over without having to call the phone company. There is a way to do it, or so I am told. Please tell me what exactly I have to do in order to switch to the new phone! Thank you!
