how to switch phones on Verizon?

alright i just bought a new Verizon phone from my cousin. i want to make this my current phone. i tried to call and their system is down. i think there is a way to do this on the internet, and i need you guys to teach me how. please easy to follow instructions... best answer and points will be awarded. THANKS
