how to stop my puppy chihuahua from whining in the crate ?

She even whines sometimes when the crate is right next to me ,but she gets excessively loud when i walk out of the room, do i hit the crate yell at her. What is a form of punishment i could use to interact with her to get her to know she needs to stop.
 
She obviously hates the crate really bad. Calm her down and have her get used to it. Yelling may only make her more upset and probably even louder whining.
