how to start the engine of a 2000 suzuki sv650?

Just brought my first bike, I getting the state inspection done today. Been looking it over and know this might sound as a dumb question but I haven't been able to start it up. I have checked all the fluids and followed the steps in my safety class but I am still having no luck. Bought the bike from a private seller that no longer had the manual. Can someone help me out,maybe im missing something.
 
some bikes have a kickstand kill switch. Try starting it while sitting on it with the kickstand up and the transmission in neutral. make sure the kill switch on the handlebar is turned to the 'run' position.
 
Is it in neutral? If it isn't, put it in neutral. Do you get power through the bike at all? Lights? Gauges?

Does it turn but not kick over? Is the choke on? Please be a bit more specific as to what you've done and not done.
