How to start exercising in your late 30's?

I have never exercised once in my adult life, and now i'm told that i HAVE to. No less than 1 hour 3 x a week. WELL, one hour exercise video makes me extremely sore (i'm totally out of shape obviously) and there are many exercises that i can't even begin to do, things that my body just will not do! So do i wait until i'm not sore between excercising sessions or do i stick to the 3 times per week even though i am still sore from the time before? also, the reviews on the dvd i got say it's more for a beginner, not really worth their time or money, so i think i've got what i need, i just need to figure out the right way to do it. Wait as long as i'm still sore, or follow the 3x a week anyway? Thanks for any suggestions!!
