How to start a bike after about a year of not running?

My dad got shipped out to afghanistan a while ago and he told me to start his bike sometimes to keep it running but i'm having some trouble with it. He didn't start it before he left for a while so i'm guessing it hasn't even been turned on in about a year or more maybe. It's an older Kawasaki Z 1000 LTD from the late 70's or early 80's.

So there's this battery charger thing hooked up to the wall next to the bike that has a green light next to the words "storage charging" on it so i'm guessing the battery is good to go and the lights on the bike turn on and what not so the battery can't be the problem. What i've been doing (from a brief memory of him showing me how) is putting the key in, putting it in neutral, turning it on "run", pulling the choke out of the left side, flipping the fuel switch up, then kicking the kick start down. I'm having no luck though. I can hear the engine start to wind up but it never actually starts. There's a black button by the right handlebar that also makes the engine wind up when i press it but i don't know what it is really.

Could anyone help me out here? Go through the steps on how to start a kick-start bike or give tips or something? Anything really, i don't know much about bikes. I was just told to start it sometimes to keep it running.

Thanks
