The community I'm moving to ( which also happens to be the same community my parents live in) has very strict bylaws reguarding pets. Dogs have to be kept on leads when being walked and cats are not allowed to roam. Animal control vans sometimes can be seen patroling around, so efforts to enforce the law are being made. However I still see cats wandering around killing birds or getting into people's yards. One of my parent's neighbours lets their cat out and she's always pestering their beagles and using the flower box as her litter box.
What can I do to make people in my neighbourhood more aware that it's not only the law but unsafe to let your cats roam around?
There are few busy roads in the area where animals are regularly being hit. All the animal rescues and SPCA's refuse to allow cats to be adopted out as outdoor cats because of bylaws and dangers.
how is having an indoor cat the same as declawing a cat?
In vet studies it's shown that indoor cats live longer then outdoor cats.
I have nothing against a cat outside but the animal should be supervised, in a safe cat run, or on a leash. When I was a kid our cat was out in the garden with us all the time. But she was trained enough to stay close, and all she wanted to do was lay in the sunshine. I know lots of people that walk their cats like you would walk a dog.
Roaming cats can cause a lot of damage to property and to the environment. one of the factors in the drop of dormouse populations is domestic cats killing them. Most cats don't kill to eat they kill to play and song birds and other small animals that my be at risk are suffering because of it.
Everytime you open the door to let the cat out your taking the gamble that it's never comming back. I don't understand why people become upset when their cats " run away" and they're the ones letting it roam everyday.
