I recently noticed my desktop pc no longer plays system sounds (log on, log off, hardware insert/eject, etc.). The volume icon has also disappeared from the task bar. I have checked the box to show volume icon in task bar, made sure widows sound scheme is selected, reinstalled sound card, and nothing works. I am able to play music and videos through my media players, but there are no system sounds and no sound in my internet browser (such as online videos). Also, the play button -under the sounds tab of sounds and audio devices- is grayed out.
