How to ship a bike anywhere in the UK? (via Royal Mail)?

I currently have a bike im planning to sell on ebay
and its the first time ive ever sold anything online.
I want to ship it thru Royal Mail
but I have no idea whats best way to do it..
Is it much cheaper to deliver the item myself to the post?
Or a pickup would cost the same?
If so, How can I arrange a pickup?
And how much would it cost?
