How to sew things like my name, hearts, etc onto a backpack like this?

It was probably personalized when the person bought it. It's embroidery, and you probably wouldn't be able to do it yourself (ok, you could, if you did it by hand it would be majorly labor intensive though. And if you had a sewing machine that did it, you'd already know how). You could probably try a tailor in your area or some other sewing service and see if they offer embroidering. Good luck!
 
this was done with an embroidery machine.

most of them have a screen with a computer so you can pick out, and see what you are sewing, you just place the item you want to sew in the machine and it does the work for you. you can pretty much sew anything you want on it.

they're a bit pricey though. i would shop around for the best deal.

or, the best bet is to just take your bookbag to a place that has a machine and just pay them to sew it for you, much cheaper. most likely under $10.
