How to run a .php script? Please explain!?

Thanks! I need to run a .php script, but I have little idea how that works and what's required for it. Please explain in easy terms. I'm not stupid when it comes to computers, but this is a field I've never had to work with before.

PHP normally runs in conjunction with a web server, as it's a server side mark-up language.
