How to qualify as an independent for financial aid? I am in dire need!?

Currently, I am completing my transfer units at a CC, but I am going to be moving far away. On top of that, I am solely responsible for financing my education. However, according to the questions on the FAFSA form I am a dependent. Also, because my family's income is in the mid to upper range, they are assuming I will be getting help from them. Which is FALSE, because with the circumstances my family is in, they simply can't afford to pay for my tuition. So I am pretty much on my own for EVERYTHING.

I need as much aid as I can get, because this is my first time ever that I am so far from home. Also, I am planning on going to a considerably expensive school, and because of my majors, I will be going through an exceptionally rigorous schedule. How can I qualify as an independent? Is there a FAFSA rep I can speak to that can make that exception for students like me? I live in California, if that helps.
I am planning on applying to multiple scholarships. My other question would be, what are my options in terms of fully covering my tuition or getting a full scholarship?
Also, if this helps, I am going to a UC.
