i know it's still r12 because it has thread fittings instead of snap pn fittings that r134 has.

If the R12 recharge kit won't fit the fittings on your vehicle, it has been converted to R134A coolant.
Given the scarcity and price of R12, this has become a very common conversion.
I'm very surprised that you were able to purchase an R12 kit at all - in the state where I live, you need to be a certified A/C technician to purchase R22 or R12. In California, they are proposing a bill which will require certification to purchase R134A also.

make sure you have the correct freon charge. R12 is old stuff...now cars use r134. There may be an adapter. Go to autozone or pepboys and tell them whats up...tell them the car make model and year...theres a reference book/comp prog.
