how to put a manual jeep in 4x4?

If the 4x4 is a stick, do you put the jeep in netural, put in the clutch and put the gear shifter in 4x4, than engage the jeep into gear? Or can you leave the jeep in gear with the clutch in, and just select 4x4?

Also if your jeep is in netural already do you have to have the clutch in to change it to 4x4?
