How to prevent the Red Rings of Death on an Xbox 360?

I have an Xbox 360. It has gotten the red rings before and was repaired free because it was in warranty. I am going to be playing with it on xboxlive for 1 year. I don't want it to overheat and get the rings again because it is no longer in warranty and i don't want to waste the subscription to xboxlive.
