how to preserve signatures on my acoustic guitar?

i'm wanting to get all my friends an family to sign my guitar, but i noticed a permanent marker just rubs right off. should i sand down the guitar so they'll stick better? or a different type of marker? If i need to sand it, what type of sandpaper should i use?

i already tried some stuff i got from walmart called rust-oleum lacquer high lustre coating, but it just smudged the marker right off
