How to open a film camera without ruining the film inside (without winding it up)?

I loaded film into an olympus trip 35, and i'm not exactly sure if its caught on the winder properly. In order for me to check, Id have to open it up but I'm not sure what level of darkness (so that i can still see) or how to do it without resetting the amount of photos taken.

Any advice?
