How to mod an Xbox 360?

I want to download mods and patches on my PC and put them on the Xbox, short and simple. I have a cable hooked up from the console to the modem, and I am able to share files between my PC and 360. If I want to download custom stuff for games, can I just throw it in there or do I have to mod the 360 in any special way first?
