Leave your camera in the drawer and go out and about making the old viewing square with the thumbs and forefingers. Start by concentrating on the details in the square and what, and how much of, features and things appear on the sides. As you move the viewing square you will see a composition your gut tells you is right. Bad photography gets focused on the specific subject that caught your attention. That's OK for a shot of grandma's face, but otherwise makes for some poor results.
Now go get the camera out of the drawer. And don't get hung up on expensive gear. Perfect you skill with el-cheapo and go from there.
You Sunset was excellent. .
