I always thought of apparent wind as the wind that blows against you as you go into it, and natural wind being the true wind.
Now, apparent wind would mean its coming from the front of the boat as you accelerat, inreasing as you accelerate. So if true wind is... let say... 30 degrees pushing you downwind 6 knots, if you pulled your sail in to be close hauled, the speed would stay (but be quite reduced) and since the true wind will blow the boat over to the left (or right) the apparent wind will skim over the close hauled sail, making it work for you?
:/ Good theory or no?
btw, if apparent wind definition is wrong, please correct ti for me, I mix up apparent wind and what im actually trying to say with often :#
