how to keep from being absolutely winded?

tomorrow we are running the mile at school. im always so winded after the first lap. i want to know how to breathe correctly as to not kill myseft. also, how to avoid cramps.
and if there are any tips on how to run better, let me know
and any foods that might be good to eat for more energy, or avoid cramps, etc.
