how to i deter birds (magpies and pigeons mainly) from roosting in a tree in my garden?

You could try dangling old CD's from the branches. Its suppose to scare them off. Or another thing I saw on TV the other night was potatoes with goose feathers pierced into them in the form of a circle( suppose any feathers would do) One or two of these dangled from a tree is suppose to look like a hawk and so keep the birds at a distance. Failing that you could get a cat and have it climb the tree.
 
aside from cutting the tree down or parking your car elsewhere i think you might want to buy a cat.just an idea.i have a cat and he usually takes good care of birds
