How to have a good work/life balance in a Sales job involving travel?

Hi,
My partner is considering a Sales job where travel (2-3 times a week) is required to visit clients. The company offers no benefits and he might work 40h a week. I am slightly concerned because this might be exhausting and affect our quality time. He is going for an interview on Friday. He will have to drive to visit clients in the UK (I don't know why he could not simply fly or get a train ticket to go to London for example!. The office is in Newcastle). I am also concerned because he's been unemployed before and I am not sure whether he is ready for this perm job. I would appreciate if some Sales people could give me some advice on how to keep a perm job in Sales without damaging the work/life balance? Many thanks. PS: I also wonder how working hours are counted when you travel and if the laptop, iPhone and company car can be used for private purposes? S
