How to go about raising baby platy fish in aquarium?

Hi all, today i made an exciting discovery when i looked into my 45 gallin aquarium and found 3 baby fry. Immediately knew that they were the young of my red wag platy's, for they are the only paired fish i have in the tank.

I have never seen successful hatching or laying of eggs for that matter in my tank.

I have never raised fish before I admit but I am not super excited in seeing if I can mature these young fish. What I have done is created a small, in-tank nursery, which is filled with tank water, and is suspended in the tank to maintainn temperature. I added some minor gravel and a small plant for I have noticed the 3 fry enjoy hiding and clinging to plants for protection. I did this because I have a few angel fish who I am certain would more than enjoy eating the babies.

So my question is what should i change about my set up if it needs to be changed at all, and how do I feed and keep the babies healthy,

Thanks, im stoked to see if i can help them live! *putting them back in the main tank scares me for there are too many fish that i fear would ea them*

the little baby fish love patches and tufts of grass... all we did in our aquarium is put one in there and suddenly we had baby fish. we just used a short, plastic little tuft of grass you can find at the pet store. add one to your nursery, see what happens :)

Congratulations,

Take out the gravel but leave the plant in, the gravel just makes it harder to clean.
If possible, try and get a fine mesh breeding net from your LGS as this will allow the water to be filtered via the main aquarium's filter
Don't put them in the main tank because they'd just get eaten or sucked in the filter, breeding cage is a very good idea.
Good to see you've done all of the right things
I feed my new born guppies powdered fish flakes and they seem to do just fine. You can buy liquid fry formula from your LFS but it isn't that essential as the fish will require larger food soon anyways.

Good luck

BTW, Platy's are livebearers, that means they give birth to live young, no external eggs involved.
