How to get Windows Media Player to play AVI files?

I have XP and just re-installed WMP 11.

Simply watching .avi's on VLC player won't help. I'm trying to make a video compilation using Windows Movie Maker, by converting DVD files into AVI files. But it seems Movie Maker can only read or accept the same file formats that Media Player does. If I can get Media Player to recognize AVI files, my problem should be solved.

Here's what I've already tried, based on recommendations from other forums:

1. Downloading Codecs
It doesn't seem to matter what codecs I download, it won't work. K-Lite, Divx, etc. And I'm afraid to download too many or they might conflict with one another.

2. Cleaning out codecs and starting over
I went to
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware > Video codecs > Properties
to clean them out. But they won't delete. I click on one, click remove, says "are you sure?," click yes, it's gone. But as soon as I open the window again, the Codec is there again! Even after a restart.
(Note: the above path leads to the same window as:
Right click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager > Sound, video, and game controllers > Video codecs)

3. Uninstalling Windows Media Player
In Add/Remove Programs, the only option I have is for my upgrade to WMP 11. I can only "roll back" to WMP 10.
WMP 10 IS NOT AN OPTION ON THE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS WINDOW.
And yes, "Show updates" IS checked at the top.
I deleted everything related to Media Player I could find in Add/Remove and then re-installed MP11 fresh. No dice.

4. Downloading/consulting Gspot
Gspot tells you exactly what codec is needed to play any given file.
Well for every AVI file I've tested on it, Gspot tells me I ALREADY HAVE THE PROPER CODEC.
"Codec: DX50
Status: Codec(s) are installed"
"Codec: XVID
Status: Codec(s) are installed"

5. System restore
Selecting a system restore point is not an option. WMP hasn't recognized AVI's for years. I just haven't worried about it because I used VLC to watch, but now watching is not my problem.

6. Don't use Windows Movie Maker
Well yeah. But Movie Maker is already on my computer, and I kind of want to figure this out anyway. Nobody else on the net seems to be having the same problem.

So do I need to somehow consolidate my codecs into a file that WMP can reference?
Or are my codec packages conflicting? Can I just delete all video AND audio codecs and start over? And how would I do that?
