My plan: I have a 5 gallon tank that I am going to raise a betta fish in. I'm going to use the iron supplemental substrate called Flourite and plant the tank with just one very hardy live plant and mostly fake silk plants. The water I will use is from 1 gallon jugs of spring water from Cub Foods. I have a mechanical filter that also has the packet of activated charcoal to run the water through. I also have a heater and a good strong fluorescent light bulb made for live plants in aquariums that is 20 inches long.
My question: if I set the aquarium up this way at 78-80 degrees F and one live plant and 10 hour light... when will I know the water is ready to ease my betta in?
